Russian rouble down 9% vs China's yuan in September
MOSCOW, Sept 30 (Reuters) -The Russian rouble strengthened against the dollar and the euro on Monday, supported by forex sales by exporting companies to pay their taxes but weakened further against China's yuan, currently the most traded foreign currency in Russia.
By 0815 GMT the rouble RUB= was up 1.1% at 93.30 against the dollar, according to indicative LSEG data. The rouble weakened by 1.8% against the dollar in the previous session.
The Russian currency was down 1.8% CNYRUB= at 13.33 against China's yuan, according to LSEG. The rouble was flat at 13.29 against the yuan in trade on the Moscow Stock Exchange.
The rouble has lost over 9% against the yuan since Sept. 4 and remains near its lowest in one year against the Chinese currency. The decline is due to fears about yuan liquidity once a licence by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control that allows banks to deal with the Moscow Stock Exchange expires on Oct. 12.
Trading in major currencies in Russia has shifted to the over-the-counter (OTC) market, obscuring price data, since Western sanctions on the Moscow Exchange and its clearing agent, the National Clearing Centre, were introduced on June 12.
One-day rouble-dollar futures, which trade on the Moscow Exchange and are a guide for OTC market rates, were up 0.29% at 93.13. The central bank's official exchange rate, which it calculates using OTC data, was set at 92.71 to the dollar.
The rouble was up 0.72% at 104.53 against the euro EURRUB=, LSEG data showed. Brent crude oil LCOc1, a global benchmark for Russia's main export, was up 0.81% at $72.65.
