USD/JPY enters new 150-152 trading zone
USD/JPY has established a trading range between the 150 and 152 psychological levels.
The pair has remained bid for about two weeks as Treasury yields firm amid shifting expectations over the extent of Fed rate cuts and the U.S. budget implications of a possible Donald Trump election win. The 20-day rolling correlation between USD/JPY and the 10-year Treasury yield is about 0.94 (1.00 is a perfect positive correlation).
Dollar dips are expected to be shallow amid conservative positioning ahead of U.S. elections and after Fed officials signaled on Tuesday that future interest rate cuts would likely be gradual. Robust corporate earnings this week further underpin the view that the U.S. economy remains sound.
This level of dollar optimism, however, may fade if the US employment outlook sours. Weekly jobless claims are due Thursday and the October jobs report is on November 1.
Ahead of this data, there are risks in Japan that may keep the yen on the back foot. First, dovish posturing by Bank of Japan officials may persist amid concerns about domestic growth and inflation. On Tuesday, the IMF lowered its 2024 growth forecast to a scant 0.3%, down from 0.7% projected in July. Comments by BOJ Governor Ueda on Wednesday will be closely scrutinized to see if his growth or inflation outlook has shifted.
Second, significant losses by the ruling Liberal Democrat-Komeito coalition during weekend elections in Japan could force the resignation of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in favor of a more dovish regime.
